How do I sign up for courses?
Once you have chosen which courses you want, please visit our Enrollment page, and follow the easy-to-use online form. You will receive a confirmation email then you will need to phone our office to complete your application. You can always call our Toll Free number at 1-877-862-2707 and the BCOS staff will process your application.
Where and how is the course taught?
Everything is accessed through the Internet so students can take courses from school, home, the library, or any other place you can log in. Any modern web browser will be able to access our classroom software, called Moodle. Included in Moodle is a chat program so that students can communicate with their teacher or fellow students in real time, a course calendar, a file transfer system so that students can upload their assignments, student forums for posting topic discussions, and more. Moodle interfaces with Skype, a free computer to computer phone system, so that teachers can speak directly with students in real-time voice over the internet or phone line.
Do I have to follow a time schedule?
This depends on the school program you have signed up with. If your teacher or school requires you to follow a timed schedule, our courses are designed to fit within a normal school calendar. Our courses work asynchronously, which means that you do not have to work at a specific time, though you will want to schedule specific times when you can chat with your teacher or speak to them via Skype. Students can work at their own pace any time before or after school throughout the school year, though they should finish their course during the school calendar year they signed up for.
We're committed to providing the most flexible schedule possible for students. This flexibility is still required to meet BC Ministry of Education scheduled reporting periods and provincial exam times. Summer school is also a session that has a deadline to allow teachers time to prepare for the new year and for our technicians to upgrade our system. How much time does it take to complete a course?
All of our courses are set up in a semester format of 18 lessons- one lesson per week. If students want to work in a linear pace they would complete one lesson every two weeks. Time on each lesson varies from the course's academic level and the student's ability. Typically, a grade 11 level core subject course will average 60 to 90 minutes a day for a semester approach. Most higher level courses will take the average student 110 to 130 hours to complete.
What do your courses cost?
Our courses are funded through the BC Ministry of Education, and free for BC resident students who are Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. Students are responsible for purchasing calculators and (optional) provincial exam study guides.
Adult students (born on or before the 1st of July, 1998 ) can enroll in our courses but do not qualify for funding. The fee for non-Ministry-funded adults is $650 per course plus the cost of resources (textbooks). Please contact us for more information.
The cost for International students residing in BC is $800 per course plus the cost of resources (textbooks) if applicable.
Will my computer be able to run the Online Courses?
Any computer (PC or Mac) that has internet access will be able to access our website and all course content. Some courses will require you to have the free Adobe Flash Player installed in order to view the full content. The courses are compatible with any of the latest browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, or Safari. We recommend high speed internet for the best experience, although it is not strictly required.
Are these BC Certified Courses?
The courses are prepared to meet all of the BC Learning Outcomes as defined by the Ministry of Education. Courses that have Provincial Exams are designed to help prepare students prior to taking the exam. All of the teachers with BC Online School are BC Certified Teachers and qualified in the subjects they are teaching.
How will my credits and grades be reported?
BC Online reports your credits and grades directly to your school of record on a quarterly basis. Your school will then report it to the BC Ministry of Education. If you are no longer at a school, we will report directly to the Ministry. At any time students can check their grade and progress in Moodle.
What about Provincial Exams?
The BC Ministry of Education sets all dates for provincial exams. Courses with provincial exams are specifically designed to prepare the student for those exams. Please check with your school of record to reserve a space to write the exam. If you cannot find a place to write the exam, email requesting help. We will inquire with other schools as close as possible and find the best options for you.

What should I do if I have forgotten my password?
To reset your password please go here. You will need the email address that you signed up with.
When will my textbooks arrive?
If the course you are taking requires physical textbooks, they will be sent to you once you begin the course. There is at least one month of text material on the course site which you can use and submit the first few assignments. Once you hand in the first assignment, textbooks will be sent out to your home address. Please keep the directions on how to return the materials so you are not charged for them.
Advanced Placement courses and dual credits.
Some of our Advanced Placement courses (ie. AP Calculus / Calculus 12) have been designed to meet the learning outcomes for the Advanced Placement course as well as the equivalent high school course. This means a student can choose to take one of the courses, or with a bit extra work, both of the courses. The student would then receive 8 high school credits for taking two courses as well as have the choice of taking the optional AP exam in May to receive university credit (AP exams require a $125.00 fee paid to the College Board for the exam which we collect with registration for the exam).
What should I do if I want to attend online school full-time?
You will need to change your school of registration by applying at Heritage Christian Online School a fully online division for students who want to do all their education through a distance learning program.
What should I do if I do not see my marks updated with the Ministry?
These reports are scheduled to match the ministry reporting windows. They are not sent out every week. Keep in mind that checking the unofficial Ministry transcript site means you are checking a site that is updated after these scheduled reports and not every week. If you do not see your grade and you have finished and it is after a report email has been sent to you, check with your school of record. If they have not received it, phone the office of BC Online School for assistance.
BC Online School will report an interim grade at the end of March to the BC Ministry of Education to be placed on your PSI report if:
For an interim grade to be submitted to your PSI report:
- 50% of the course is completed and assessed by the end of March.
- You must set up your PSI report with your school of record.
For an interim grade other than PSI:
- Confirm with the University that they will accept an interim grade submission by fax, email or mail.
- Double check with the university that they will accept an interim grades (some will only accept online final grades).
- You must have 50% of your course completed and assessed when you make a request.
- You must request the grade one week in advance of when the report needs to be sent.

- Complete a new request for each university you need a report sent to.
Manually submitted interim reports will be sent to the contact address/fax or email that you provide. We will not be able to fill out interim reports with inaccurate information.
