II. The Themes of Stewardship and Sustainability
The purpose of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to explore a topic of interest that relates to issues concerning Canadian and/or World Geography. Indeed, the Scriptures state that God’s creation is for our use but that we also must be good stewards of everything He has created for us.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Genesis 1: 26.
As you begin your research for the Stewardship of a Nation Unit Final Project, make sure you make mental note of the following foundational questions and definitions.
-
Consider and reflect upon the meaning of stewardship and sustainability:
- stewardship: the concept that humankind has a God-given responsibility to care for plants, animals, and the environment as a whole
- sustainability: the ability to provide for the needs of the world's current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves. When a process is sustainable, it can be carried out over and over without negative environmental effects or impossibly high costs to anyone involved.
-
Identify contemporary Canadian and/or world geographic issues that relate to stewardship and sustainability that interest you.
-
Compare and contrast competing approaches to the stewardship and sustainability of the Earth’s resources. What you believe about the origins of the universe and the end of time will influence your thinking about the topics listed below.
III. Topic Choices
Note: You may choose to agree or disagree with these statements.
- The rate of population growth has NOT outstripped the capacity of the world to support world population.
- Government corruption is the primary problem hampering the development of poorer countries.
- Escapist Christian eschatologies (views of the ‘end times’) result in Christian apathy towards the environment.
- NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) are the most effective institutions for providing foreign aid to poor countries.
- The core and periphery pattern in economic development is the primary reason for global economic disparities.
- Greater government intervention is the key to reducing regional economic disparities in Canada.
- Climate change is primarily caused by natural processes.
- The threat of pandemics (such as the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic) have been exaggerated by special interest groups such as the media and the medical profession.
- Other. If you don’t like any of the topics listed above, propose an alternative topic to your teacher. This must be done at least two weeks before the deadline.
